The breast pump is an instrument with which we have become familiar for years now. Increasingly linked to a need for time and schedules for returning to work, in recent years there has been an increasing tendency to express milk and then feed the baby when the mother is not around. With the increase in the use of the breast pump , research and development have brought ever better models to the market, ever more silent, small, delicate, functional. But specifically what is the breast pump?

What is the Breast Pump

The breast pump is a tool for expressing breast milk to feed the newborn. The reasons why you pump milk are different and we will see them shortly. In general, the breast pump consists of a "pump" which creates the vacuum and extracts the milk, a cup which is applied to the breast and a bottle which collects the milk. There are 2 types of breast pumps, electric ones and manual ones. The difference between the two is simply how they are activated. The manual breast pump , as the word implies, must be used manually and it is therefore necessary to activate the pump manually and continue to do so until the necessary quantity of milk has been extracted. The electric breast pump works automatically thanks to a pump equipped with an electric motor. Operation is very simple and intuitive. It is applied to the breast, it turns on and the breast pump will do the rest. The motor will create the vacuum and start extracting. In the electric models it is also possible to adjust intensity and speed. A breast pump can be an excellent ally for new parents precisely because it allows the milk to be expressed and stored, giving the mother the possibility of being able to get away from the baby by delegating some feeds to the father or grandparents.

Why do you use the breast pump

The use of a breast pump is now simple and accessible to everyone without the need for large machinery and without even incurring large expenses. The reason why the breast pump is used lies behind the ever-changing needs of mothers and families and beyond. In many cases, in fact, the breast pump is used for work reasons. Therefore, having to go back to work, the mother leaves the milk in the fridge so that the baby can feed on mother's milk even if the mother is not present. Another reason may be related to the mother's fatigue, as breastfeeding deprives her of energy. It is therefore possible to pump the milk and delegate a few feedings to the father, allowing the mother to rest or to take some time to relax. Another reason could be that of breast problems that could prevent classic breastfeeding. On other occasions, the mother produces a lot of milk and feels pain in the breast. In these cases, the breast pump relieves the mother by expressing the excess milk. In general, the breast pump is a very useful tool in all cases in which the baby cannot physically attach to the breast but can still be given breast milk. On the contrary, it is very useful for expressing milk in those rare cases in which the baby cannot feed on mother's milk.
