Names for children: let's find out the ranking

The ISTAT report of the year 2017, 'Birth rate and fertility of the resident population', in addition to reporting the data relating to the birth rate in Italy, also signed the ranking of the most common female and male names in our country. Among the male names, the following took to the podium: 1. Francesco: 3.9% (out of the total number of newborn boys) 2.Leonardo: 2.84% 3. Alexander: 2.57% Among the female names: 1. Sofia: 3.26% (out of the total of female newborns) 2. Julia: 2.79% 3. Aurora: 2.64%

Go classic or aim for particular names for girls and boys

Francesco is by far the most loved name, in the top ten since 2013. However, there are differences between regions: for example, if Francesco is in first place in the south, Leonardo is preferred in the north. For females, however, Sofia is the most chosen name throughout the peninsula, but in Puglia, Basilicata, Sicily and Campania Aurora is instead the absolute winner. Among the trends of 2019, the names Leone and Zeno are considered very trendy, as well as Eva, Emma and Beatrice on the fairer sex front. The interesting aspect is that, although in Italy there are about 30,000 different names for boys and the same number for girls (including both simple and compound names), the distribution of the number of children along these lists reveals a high concentration around to the first 30 names (46% for boys and almost 40% for girls). It should also be remembered that in Italy children cannot be given ridiculous and/or shameful names, nor the name of their father or living brothers, even if followed by Jr. Furthermore, a female name cannot be given to a male and vice versa (the only exception is Andrea, considered unisex).

How to choose the names of the baby boy and girl on the way

Advice: write your favorite names on a piece of paper, look up their meaning and pronounce first and last names together, to check if they sound harmonious, even taking into account their respective lengths.
According to the law, you can give your children a maximum of three names: if they are separated by a comma, in the signature there will be an obligation to report only the first name; if they are not separated by a comma, all registered names must be reported.
