Nutrition, the harm of smoking, medicines

Feeding time During lactation, the diet must be more abundant, even if not excessive, varied and adequate in liquids and fibres. Meat, fish, cheese, vegetables and fruit are all great foods for the nursing mother. Water, juices, fruit juices and cow's milk provide vitamins and mineral salts, important substances for both mothers and their babies. It is important to drink, also to avoid constipation, a frequent disorder in mothers. However, it is advisable to know that drinking in quantities greater than necessary, for example more than 1 litre/1 liter and a half a day of liquids, does not affect the quantity of milk produced. During the breastfeeding period it is recommended not to drink too much coffee, wine and liqueurs. As is known, smoking is harmful to the health of mothers and babies. Even the smoke of those who live at home is harmful: children who live with people who smoke have more frequent coughs, bronchitis and asthma. When someone is smoking in a closed place, it is better to take the child to another room, or ask the smoker to leave and smoke elsewhere. During breastfeeding it is advisable not to take medicines without medical advice. Source: saluter.it Portal of the Emilia-Romagna regional health service
