The umbilical cord

umbilical cord The umbilical stump that remains attached to the belly of newborns usually detaches on its own after the first 7-10 days of life: during this period it is necessary to wrap it in clean, dry gauze, preferably sterile, and cover it with a bandage elastic, replacing them with each diaper change; it is advisable to keep it, with the relative bandage, outside the diaper. After the cord has fallen off, it is advisable to continue covering the umbilical area with dry gauze until the wound is completely dry; usually this happens in two or three days. In the event that the redness remains evident for a longer time or the wound struggles to heal, it is necessary to contact the paediatrician or midwife. The umbilical cord can be touched, the little ones are not affected. Source: saluter.it Portal of the Emilia-Romagna regional health service
