Stuttering: an often transient disorder

Balbuzie: un disturbo spesso transitorio

According to the WHO, stuttering affects an average of 1% of the world's population; in Italy about 1 million people suffer from it, with peaks of 5% in pre-school age (about 250 thousand cases), i.e. when children begin to formulate their first words and sentences.

In general, however, the disturbance is transient and the little one soon stops stuttering, without the need for any help: this is the case in 74% of cases, at least according to the studies conducted by Yairi & Ambrose, relating to the range from 1 to 4 years.

Instead, it is after that age that the problem becomes more pronounced and stabilizes, requiring targeted intervention.
