How to protect children and babies from the sun

Come proteggere bambini e neonati dal sole

Protecting children from the sun is extremely important to prevent skin damage and long-term health problems. Here are some tips to adequately protect children from the sun's rays.

Avoid direct exposure to the sun

Avoid exposing children to the sun during the hottest hours of the day, usually between 10am and 4pm. Try to schedule outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon.

Wear protective clothing

Dress children in light, long-sleeved clothing and long pants to cover most of the body. Choose light, breathable fabrics that offer additional sun protection. There are also specific suits with built-in sun protection factor (FPS).

Hats and sunglasses

Provide children with wide-brimmed hats that cover the face, ears and neck. Make sure your sunglasses have lenses that block at least 99% of UV rays.

Use suitable sunscreens

Choose a sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 or higher. Make sure it's suitable for use on children and offers full-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed parts of the body, at least 15-30 minutes before going outdoors, and reapply it every two hours, or more frequently if children get wet or sweaty.

Umbrellas and awnings

If you are spending time by the sea or in open places, try to create shaded areas using umbrellas, awnings or gazebos. This will provide additional protection from direct sunlight.

Protect your feet

Be sure to protect children's feet by using closed-toe shoes or sandals that cover most of the foot. Avoid walking on hot surfaces such as sand or asphalt, as they could cause burns.

Remember that babies less than 6 months old should avoid direct sun exposure and the use of sunscreen. For newborns, however, try to keep them in the shade and cover them with light protective clothing!
